OurDream AI Characters: How to Find, Create, and Customize

⚠️ OurDream AI is an 18+ platform. Character creation tools include adult content options available on paid plans only. Use responsibly — see our responsible use guide for mental health context.

The character system is the core of everything on OurDream AI. With over 7 million community-created characters and a 28-parameter customization engine, the platform offers more depth than most users initially discover. This guide covers the full character ecosystem — from browsing the library to building a fully custom persona with lorebooks.

Guide to creating and customizing OurDream AI characters

The Character Library: 7 Million Options

The community character library is the fastest entry point for new users. Every character in the library was created and published by other OurDream AI users — and the variety reflects 10 million+ active accounts contributing to the ecosystem.

How to browse effectively:

  • Use the genre/personality filters to narrow by archetype (romantic, adventurous, intellectual, mysterious, playful)
  • Filter by content rating: SFW characters are available on all plans; NSFW characters require a paid subscription
  • Sort by popularity to find highly-rated characters with more consistent behavior
  • Check character tags — well-tagged characters signal that their creator invested in setup quality

One practical note: character quality in a community library varies enormously. A character with thousands of interactions and detailed tags will generally perform better than a freshly created one with minimal setup. Spend a few minutes evaluating before committing to a long conversation.

Creating Your Own Character: The 28-Parameter System

Custom character creation gives you control over every aspect of your AI companion. The 28 customization parameters span four main categories:

Physical Appearance

  • Body type, height, and build
  • Skin tone, hair color and style, eye color
  • Facial features and distinguishing characteristics
  • Default outfit and style preferences

Personality and Communication

  • Core personality traits (up to 5 primary traits)
  • Communication style: formal, casual, poetic, blunt, playful
  • Emotional range: how the character expresses joy, frustration, affection
  • Conflict resolution style: avoidant, assertive, nurturing

Backstory and Context

  • Name, age, and occupation
  • Origin story and key life events
  • Relationships and social connections
  • Secrets, fears, and motivations

Voice and Media

  • Voice profile selection from 19 available profiles
  • Voice tone preferences (soft, assertive, warm, neutral)
  • Image generation style preferences

Pro tip: Fill every field deliberately. Characters with sparse backstories produce generic responses. A character with a detailed backstory, consistent personality traits, and a specific voice profile will deliver dramatically better interactions.

Lorebooks: Adding World-Building Depth

Lorebooks are the most underused feature in OurDream AI. They function as persistent context documents that influence how your character responds — without consuming message space.

A lorebook entry has two parts: a key (a word or phrase that triggers the entry) and a value (the context that loads when that key appears in conversation). For example:

  • Key: "the Academy" → Value: "A prestigious magical institution where [character name] studied for 6 years. Known for strict discipline and secret underground society."
  • Key: "Marcus" → Value: "Character's childhood friend, now estranged. They had a falling out over [specific event]."

When you mention "the Academy" in chat, the lorebook automatically loads that context for the AI model, producing responses that reflect the world you built.

How to create a lorebook:

  1. Go to your character's settings
  2. Select "Lorebook" or "Add World Info"
  3. Create entries with trigger keys and descriptive values
  4. Save and activate the lorebook for your chat session

Lorebooks work best when entries are specific rather than general. "The character is kind" is too vague. "When someone is hurt, the character instinctively prioritizes their comfort over any other goal, even at personal cost" is actionable for the model.

Group Chat: Multiple Characters Simultaneously

OurDream AI supports group chats with multiple AI characters in a single conversation — a feature that remains rare among competitors like Character.AI and Replika.

Setting up a group:

  1. From the main menu, select "Group Chat"
  2. Choose 2 to 5 characters to include
  3. Set a group name and optional scenario context
  4. All characters respond in turn, with the AI managing conversation flow

Group chats work best when characters have distinct, contrasting personalities. A group where all characters are similarly agreeable produces flat dynamics. Pair an analytical character with an impulsive one, or a cynical personality with an optimistic counterpart — the contrast generates more interesting interactions.

Group chat limitations to know:

  • Message consumption counts as normal individual messages
  • Characters may occasionally "break character" by referencing other characters inconsistently
  • Lorebooks can be applied per character, but shared world context may require separate setup in each character's lorebook

Memory and Character Continuity

On the free plan, character memory lasts only 3 days. Every 3 days, the character effectively forgets all previous conversations. This severely limits any sense of ongoing relationship development.

On paid plans ($9.99/mo annual and above), memory extends to 30 days with a history of 400+ messages. This is long enough to develop genuinely consistent character arcs where your AI companion remembers your name, preferences, and past interactions.

To manage what your character remembers:

  1. Access the character's profile
  2. Go to "Memory" settings
  3. Review, edit, or selectively delete memory entries

If a character remembers something incorrectly, editing the memory entry directly produces better results than trying to correct it through conversation — the conversation-based correction often doesn't persist into the character's core memory store.
